Is It Legal to Ride an Electric Motorcycle?
There are varying styles and
categories when it comes to electric motorcycles in the market today. A lot of
them tend to fall into the following categories:
Small
Electric Motorcycles
Also known as pocket bikes, these are
amazingly small and are quick to ride. These are approximately two feet tall in
size and weigh around forty pounds on average. Despite the small size, these
are quite fast. These bikes are used with knees coming out on the side. It is a
funny sight to find adults looking seemingly large on such little machines.
With a speed of more than 50 miles per hour, these are similar to a pocket
rocket that is small yet fun to ride. Some of the best
electric motorcycle scooter are being introduced in the market,
paving the way for a complete transformation.
These vehicles are also known as
pocket bikes and are the same in resemblance to full-scale motorcycles, just
much smaller in size. These are fun to ride at any time; however, their use is
either strictly governed or is banned in places like trails, side streets,
etc., in different states. These, however, do not come with safety features for
the user. A more significant proportion of states require proper licenses and
insurance for such a vehicle to be considered legal for use on the streets. The
more extensive rule here implies that such vehicles may be used only on private
property or legally ridden property, thus exempting the driver to drive it on
roads outside.
Full-Size
Electric Motorcycles
These have been gaining good
popularity since they were first introduced in the market a few years ago. The
industry has worked enough to give rise to good competition in the industry.
The most recent changes have led users to shift from gasoline to electric power vehicles. To keep in compliance with the increasing change, even large vehicle
manufacturers have shifted to this industry. Rules applicable to vehicles
running to gasoline as similarly applicable here. The same standards, rules,
and guidelines have to be followed here. Almost all states need insurance and
bike registration in addition to a specific kind of license.
Electric
Motorcycles with Small Engines
This category falls between the two categories above. Most states consider these vehicles legal and suitable for children over the age of 16 with a state driving license. The following a requirement has to be followed:
- There is no requirement for the vehicle to shift gears.
- There is a maximum of five horsepower.
- A maximum speed of 30 mph on a straight level ground
- Comes with safety features like turn signals, mirrors, and horns
